SPG Architects projected to re-consider the incomplete structure of Casa Torcida situated on coastal hillside in Costa Rica. With footings, frame, and slab already in place, the greatest impact on the rain-forested site, which overlooked the Pacific Ocean, had already taken place before SPG Architects’ work began. The existing geometry required minor reconfiguration of the perimeter to improve the massing and use of the house. Sheer walls, bracing, and enhanced connections were required to reinforce the frame for seismic activity. Neither of these activities further degraded the site.

Further impact on the site was reduced by the decision to make the house self-sufficient in terms of energy and water use. This both eliminated the considerable expense of running electrical lines 18 km from the nearest town and avoided the inevitable suburbanization of this sparsely populated coastal area that doing so would have risked. Upon completion, this house had the largest domestic solar array (18.4 kW) in Costa Rica, which provided enough energy for lighting, appliances, and miscellaneous equipment. In the future, this solar-derived power will also provide for the needs of a complete and state-of-the-art recording studio, for which space has been designated at the ground level.

The solar panels, both photovoltaic and hot water, sit on a reflective & insulating, chemically inert & microbial-free, ceramic-based roof coating that both minimizes solar heat-gain and provides a clean source of water for the house and the pool. Roof water collects in a 75,000-gallon cistern, precluding the need for well water and eliminating any impact on the water table. No air-conditioning is required since natural cross breezes are exploited to maximize comfort in each room.

The house incorporates movable and adjustable louvered and screened panels in each living space and movable glass walls that allow the rooms to fully open so that indoors is completely merged with the outdoors. Cabinetry was locally fabricated from trees originally harvested from the foundation area and all materials were locally sourced whenever possible. High-efficiency appliances, light fixtures, and plumbing fixtures all contribute to the environmentally responsible approach to co-existing with nature in this very 21st century home. Casa Torcida provides all the comforts that the client required, making it clear that a well-considered resource-responsible approach does not preclude a commodious design that is visually appealing and functionally uncompromised. The “Fish House“, an amazing open spaces tropical house created Singapore based architect by Guz Architects. This house sited in beautiful place near the beach in Singapore, creating encourage natural ventilation and offer residents views to the ocean.. The main design concept is to create a house which has close relationship with nature and this is achieved by having a swimming-pool linking the house with the landscape and ultimately visual connections with the sea. The idea of connection is reinforced by having the basement level media-room with a u-shaped acrylic window which allows diffuse natural light in and also views out into the pool.

The curved roofs, which symbolizing the sea waves, also emphasize the idea of the nearby sea. These are almost totally covered with thin bendable photovoltaic panels supplying enough energy to the house, while the remaining area is used as a green roof giving residents some outdoor leisure spaces.

Brazilian Architects Humberto Hermeto presents beautiful house design sited at irregular terrain in Nova Lima, Brazil. This building incorporate in two uses first as a big residence with five suites, generous living and leisure spaces; and second as a large gallery for the owner. The main entrance is marked by a void at the beginning of the portico. From there, different occupations under the cover create the enclosed areas such sauna, kitchen and bedrooms. These opened spaces are extended over the gallery coverage through a large deck, a pool and garden areas. Communication between the various levels of the residence is made by a central core that contains an elevator. It connects directly the first level of the gallery to the residence level. In an intermediate level, it connects the service, garage floor and the mezzanine of the gallery.

In the lower level, the gallery, the stereotomic volume. With the need for an air-conditioned closed space, the volume arises from the ground like a big rock, a big platform. At the top level, the residence, the tectonic volume. And the second action: to get the most of the existing views, the residence is distributed under a continuous roof, constituted by a reinforced concrete portico. This portico sets the residence´s built volume. And the residence is distributed under the roof, according the needs of each space: access , recreation area, kitchen, living room, bedrooms. The Syncline House project was conceived as a threshold between the city and the mountain park in Colorado. The house is designed by Arch11 to be self sustained utilizing a ground loop heat exchange system that taps into the very bedrock seen at the distant ridge. Structural steel frame is used in place of traditional stick framing throughout the home. The western facade was challenged by height and wind exposure. The thickened wall is a steel brace frame that incorporates vertical vierendeel trusses to resist the 120 mile per hour winds coming down out of the mountains. Additionally, it accommodates the primary vertical mechanical chases.

The western wall phenomenally erodes, revealing the landscape with varying degrees of openness. At the entry, framed apertures provide controlled vignettes of the landscape from foreground meadow to high ground cliffs. As the entry opens to the living spaces the apertures transform in scale to reveal the expansive landscape in its entirety. At the southwest corner thirty feet of glass retracts into the walls, dissolving the boundary between the domestic and the wild; the living spaces are then bounded only by the uplifted cliffs beyond. A simple stair cantilevers from the stone wall. Climbing the stairs, the foreground, mid range, and ridge views are sequentially revealed. Experientially scissoring into the landscape and back into the house the stairs connect the mountain park with the house. The west wall of glazing extends the western room boundaries to the wall of rock and meadows beyond. The east wall remains closed, allowing only privileged, controlled views and light from the clerestory above. [Arch11]

The Haus Elise built in 993 sqm site area in Vienna Austria, designed by Synn Architekten with Bettina Krauk as project leader. The architect’s commissioned to built a house with private and independent area. Each structure offers room for one distinct area of life. The structure, which opens generously to the garden, harbours the living area with the connected kitchen and is the meeting point of the family. The children’s room is located in the structure closed to the street which opens to a small courtyard. The raised structure allows letting the master’s bedroom and the guest bedroom to float above the garden.

The house is as a low energy house and is heated by a heat pump with three thermal ground probes. The varying surface design of the flooring in the interior and of the façade supports the design idea. The fettled cubes clearly stand out from the base covered with anodized aluminium plates and the spine. Only the study above the garage is oriented to the street. In contrast to the surrounding buildings a restraint towards the public space, this is consistent with the wish of the clients to achieve privacy.

All the windows in the cubes are guided over the corners and thereby compose generous and, most notably for the vertical glazing, interesting optical extensions of the rooms. From a lounge corner in the living room and from the master’s bedroom one can see directly to the stars. The spine is completely glazed on the narrow side and directs the view in the direction of the movement axis to the garden.- Synn Architekten

The North Carlton Green House, a small green house designed by Zen Architects in Melbourne. The small site be used to maximum potential to increase the size of the house and also the garden space. Garden is integrated into the building to create a living, breathing, sustainable space that is a delight to inhabit. Two courtyards contain garden beds that protrude into the house and a pond that reflects light onto the ceiling. A rooftop garden provides more garden and first floor planter boxes act as privacy screens. A curtain of tillandsia air plants articulates light, while wysteria provides external shade. Floor area increased from 90m2 to 132m2 and garden is also increased from 20m2 to 35m2 as ground floor garden, first floor roof-top garden, raised planters and existing tree canopies link to create a landscape rich in diversity. This house proposes a model where ecology is the foremost concern. Green space is increased, while demands of client and planning authorities are met. This contemporary house located in Aspen, designed by Studio B Architects in the area was developed in the 1960’s and surrounding residents were quite resistant to the architectural direction. The steep site possessed challenges with drainage, topography, a small footprint, restrictive easements and was required to address very limiting neighborhood design review standards. The exterior is composed of custom zinc panels, sand-blasted concrete, aluminum window/door glazing system and tempered glass railings. The interiors consist of darkened oak flooring, cantilevered pickled oak stairs and floors, European engineered cabinetry, Carerra marble, porcelain tile shower enclosures and integral plaster walls and ceilings. The architecture is reduced to its essence and is calculated and sober in its detailing. The House 205 sited in step slopes and a great amount of trees and bushes in Catalunya Spain. This house built on a natural rocky platform, that the platform also used as either the exit or the garden of the house. The inner layout of the house is based on a lineal sequence of rooms of different proportions linked to the structure. There are great sliding opened areas, which will provide both harmony and versatility. The house can work as an open-plan space or as individual, closed spaces.

This structural system implies a very important diminishment of the weight, raw material, energy and so the CO2 emissions associated with the foundations and structure of the building. The dry assembly is easy, quick and helps saving great amounts of water. Altogether eases the building and reduces significantly the cost and time investments. The laminated wood panels may rest on sight on walls, ceilings and floors. In order to reduce the costs on coating and interior finishing, we have tried to reduce the facings on sight. The facades are ventilated and finished with coniferous wood such as Flanders pine.
