Whale Beach House is a multi-generational family weekender organized over three levels that terrace with the slope – children and grandparents on the lower level, main living areas on the mid level and parents ‘secret’ timber cabin on top. Mark Baez of MDesigns has recently completed construction of the MCube prototype in Venice, California, equipped with quite the array of both passive and active solar technologies. From solar radiant-heated floors and solar heated water to photovoltaic roof panels and the translucent light-emitting window-wall system, Baez has all his solar bases covered, making MCube not only a functional and beautiful space, but a sunny green abode. This is prefab modular home by Palo Alto architect, Joseph Bellomo, is joining the ranks of affordable, modular housing. Dubbed the House Arc, Bellomo was inspired to create the home after the success of his modular bicycle rack design, the Bike Arc — designed to provide efficient storage space for bicycles. The modular component arcs are designed to be lightweight making transport easier and cheaper. Bellomo estimates that it could cost $100,000 for an 800 square foot prefab home.
